When I decided in January 2017 that I wanted to do an Ironman one more time, little did I know that I would end up racing the ultimate Ironman race in Kona that same year. I had not exercised for some years as I had been reluctant to start training again while undergoing treatment for breast cancer and during my recovery. I needed to kickstart my training again which I did through a triathlon training program via The ROOM Abu Dhabiwith coach and good friend Rebecca Pittam. I was also introduced to the inspiring Tri Belles Abu Dhabi and so the Ironman journey began.

From those early sessions where my aim was simply to complete the Yas Triathlon sprint distance first and then not knowing I could make the ITU olympic distance (1.5 km swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run) in March, I continued my training while building up the distance in sessions. There were definitely hard moments where you question why you do it as your body hurts and training takes away a lot of time from family and friends. A huge thank you to my husband Lance and daughter Anoeska for their ongoing support throughout the year.
I needed to get up early to beat the heat, fit in training with other competing priorities and I spent a lot of time on my own but you need to continue to believe it’s possible and keep on going.

The purchase of my first ever Cervélo timetrial bike from Wolfi's Bike Shopand the tweaking of my setup at Rullens Tweewielers made all the difference. What an amazing bike.

My finish at the Ironman in Maastricht showed me that the hard work had paid off and to get a slot to the Ironman world championship in Kona was unbelievable and a dream come true for a triathlete. I used to watch the Kona DVDs as inspiration during my windtrainer sessions never expecting I would ever get there myself. There was no way I was going to give up this once in a lifetime opportunity and I even had to quit my job to make it happen.

On Saturday 14 October 2017, I completed the Ironman in Kona. The race lived up to its expectations by providing a tough race day with plenty of wind, heat and humidity but it didn’t matter as there was no way I wasn’t going to finish it. I’m still finding it hard to believe I did it but the photos are a good reminder to show it really happened. In the words of true Ironman legend Chrissie Wellington “never stop believing”.
